We have introduced a new and more secure way of connecting to the Road backoffice using purple SIM cards with built-in VPN connectivity. This update brings a dedicated connection setup, including a new backoffice URL and APN specifically designed for VPN traffic.
Purple SIM Cards (VPN Connection – New Method)
The new purple SIM cards are designed for secure communication via a VPN tunnel to the backoffice. This ensures a more controlled and reliable connection compared to current internet routing.
When using purple SIM cards, the following configuration must be applied:
Backoffice URL: ws://ocpp-internal.road.io/{Provider-slug}
APN: road.io
These settings are mandatory for all new installations using purple SIM cards. The VPN connection is automatically established through the SIM configuration and does not require additional setup on the charging station itself.
Important:
The new Purple (VPN) SIM cards only work with Security Profile 1.
Important:
If presets are used for charger configuration, a new preset must be created for installations using the new purple SIM card VPN configuration. Existing presets for white SIM cards, LAN, or Wi-Fi installations should remain unchanged and continue to be used for existing installations.
White SIM Cards (Existing Method)
White SIM cards continue to operate via the existing internet connection method (LAN, Wi-Fi, or mobile data without VPN).
For these connections, the configuration is:
Backoffice URL: ws://ocpp.road.io/{Provider-slug}
APN: m2m.services
Summary
White SIM / Wi-Fi / Ethernet → existing settings
Purple SIM → new VPN settings
Only new installations require the updated configuration
Existing installations remain unchanged
